Mackay High School has a fish program that trains students on the art and science of raising fish. The program is in partnership with the Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game (IDFG) and US Forest Service, which raises and releases fish in local waters. The program also provides the community with a showcase of the fish produced. Mackay School used this grant to help construct a new facility tailored to produce cold-water fish. The old fish lab tanks were held in a small portion of an old greenhouse, where conditions were not optimal. In the new facility, the school raises fish for production and is certified as a disease-free facility to partner with IDFG in rearing fish for state waters. This program prepares students for careers in fish biology and trains them for local jobs in the fish industry and the field. The program holds regular workshops for teachers across the state to promote trout in the classroom and to offer technical support for creating their own custom, low-cost, effective fish labs.
