For this project The Mayfly Project mentored 8 children in foster care via the sport of fly fishing. The Mayfly Project's mission is to provide unique opportunities for children in foster care to connect with the outdoors, while they also learn how to protect the environment and fisheries. During this course, the children learned how to hold and safely release a fish after being caught, how to cast, and started to learn how to tie knots. They were then taken out on boats, streams, and lakes with mentors and experienced catching bluegill, trout, and bass. They also learned about protecting against invasive species, washing boats and gear after use, and cold and warm water species. Included was a session about the importance of leaving outdoor spaces better than when they were found. At the end of their 5th outing, each youth received their own fishing gear to keep. The parents/caregivers of the children also participated a great deal and indicated they planned to continue taking the kids fly fishing.
